Find out about the Pharmacy First service:
Community Pharmacies:
As well as dispensing private and NHS prescriptions, pharmacists can give advice on taking your medications and answer questions about them, such as managing side effects. They also offer advice and over-the-counter medicines for a range of minor illnesses, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, tummy trouble and aches and pains. They can help with stopping smoking, advice about safe sex and emergency contraception.
If symptoms suggest it’s something more serious, pharmacists have been trained to make sure you get the help you need – they will tell you if you need to see a GP, nurse or other healthcare professional.
Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues without being overheard.
You usually do not need an appointment – you can just walk in during opening hours.
Find the most convenient pharmacy to you, with the services you need, on this NHS webpage (click here).
NHS Pharmacy First service
This NHS service allows you to get quick access to healthcare advice as you can walk into a pharmacy and request the service (you can also ring and request an appointment). You will speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room, with some pharmacies also offering appointments online via a video consultation.
The pharmacist will talk to you about your symptoms and will provide advice and, if necessary, supply a prescription medicine to treat the condition.
You can get help with the following seven conditions:
- Earache (for people aged 1 to 17 years)
- Impetigo (for people aged 1 year and over)
- Infected insect bites (for people aged 1 year and over)
- Shingles (for people aged 18 years and over)
- Sinusitis (for people aged 12 years and over)
- Sore throat (for people aged 5 years and over)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) (for women aged 16 to 64 years)
Find out more on the Community Pharmacy website - click here.
NHS Blood Pressure Check Service
Pharmacies are offering free NHS blood pressure checks to people aged 40 and over.
You will speak with a member of pharmacy staff in a private consultation room where a blood pressure cuff will be put on your upper arm to measure your blood pressure. Following this, you will be provided with advice about healthy living.
Depending on your blood pressure reading, you may be referred to your GP surgery. The pharmacy staff will guide you through any steps depending on your blood pressure result. To find out more about this service click here.
NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service
You can now arrange a consultation with a pharmacist or pharmacy technician to get advice or support with your contraceptive needs.
You will speak to a pharmacist or pharmacy technician in a private consultation room, with some pharmacies also offering appointments online (either by telephone or video). To find out more about this service click here.

Dispensaries:
Some GP surgeries have dispensaries from which patients can collect medicines prescribed by their GP. Dispensaries often have limited opening times and can only dispense medicines to patients living close to the surgery. They also don’t offer such a wide range of ‘over-the-counter’ and non-prescription items for sale.
