Beach Bellringers

Back to Activities

Beach Bellringers ring church bells in Landbeach and Horningsea with members from surrounding villages including Waterbeach. You don't need bellringing experience to join this friendly group.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • bellringing requires focus and concentration to follow the ‘pattern’ of the bells – it’s a surprisingly mindful activity and can help you de-stress;
  • learning a new skill is a good for the brain;
  • joining this sociable and welcoming group is an excellent way to meet new people.

“Bellringing has given me a community and an interest I can sustain for the rest of my life. It’s been hugely beneficial for my mental health.” Danielle

What to expect

Email Barbara, the Tower Captain, on the email address provided to ask if you can come along. Practices are currently on Wednesdays at 7 to 8.30pm at Landbeach and at Horningsea on the second Wednesday of the month. Barbara, Nicholas and Rowena have many years of bellringing experience and are great at explaining to newcomers what to do. There is a practice bell and a model that demonstrates how the bells work, but you will also be able to ring one of the real bells! Halfway through the practice, everyone stops for a hot drink, a biscuit and a chat.

If you’d like to join the group and take part regularly, you can ring the bells at events, church services and celebrations. Beach Bellringers sometimes visit other churches to have a go at ringing there and there are bellringing learning centres in Cambridge and Stretham where the group refine their skills.

More information

People of all ages are welcome, but if you are under 16 you will need to be accompanied by an adult. You don’t need to be a musician, a church-goer or a Christian to join the group.

With regards mobility, you need to be able to get your hands above your head and the tower (where the ringing takes place) is a confined space. You don’t need to be strong to bellring (gravity does most of the work). If you have a disability, or are sight or hearing impaired contact Barbara who can advise.

There’s free parking at Landbeach Village Hall & Sports and Social Club which is a five minute walk away.

There are accessible toilets.
