Cottenham Canvas

Back to Activities

Cottenham Canvas is a community group with the aim of promoting mental wellbeing through creativity. You don't have to be an experienced artist or a resident of Cottenham to attend.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • it will help you find the time, space and inspiration to explore your creativity;
  • attending the group will help to prevent loneliness and isolation by providing a regular social event to look forward to and a reason to leave the house and be around others;
  • art can be a powerful tool to help cope with stress, anxiety or depression – creating something often brings a sense of achievement and self worth (and can also facilitate a journey of self discovery).

What to expect

Whatever your age or artistic ability, you will be welcomed by Rob (the founder of Cottenham Canvas) every Monday evening (7-9pm), where you will find a calm and respectful space in which to explore your creativity.

The focus is on painting, drawing and other forms of mark-making on canvas or paper, using whatever medium is preferred. Members of the group can share tips and insights, or simply use the session as an opportunity to take a break from life’s stresses. It’s a friendly group but there’s no pressure to chat.

More information

Book your place by emailing Rob.

This is not a tutor-led class and you are encouraged to bring your own painting, drawing and creative projects (and materials) to sessions – your creative journey is your own! If you don’t have any materials, Rob will provide sketch paper, pencils, pastels and charcoals for you to use. The aim isn’t to produce a masterpiece but to enjoy the process and spend time with others.

You don’t have to stay for the full session – just come for as long as you can.

The venue is wheelchair accessible and has toilets and parking.

Sessions cost £4 to cover room hire and materials – bring cash on the day.
