Kingfisher Day Centre at Gamlingay Eco Hub

Back to Activities

Kingfisher Day Centre is a group for adults who have physical disabilities, mental health issues, cognitive impairment or learning disabilities. It meets in Gamlingay Eco Hub and offers a wide range of activities to suit everyone's interests and abilities.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • it enables people to make new friends reducing social isolation;
  • offers a wide range of fun and stimulating activities – there’s always something to do;
  • it provides respite for family and carers.

“I love coming here. We always have activities to do, or if we want to sit and read that’s OK too. It’s a very laid back atmosphere where we have also been known to have glitter fights!”

What to expect

Kingfisher Day Centre offers a safe, supportive and fun environment for adults living with a range of physical and mental disabilities and challenges.

The majority of people attend because their disability or condition has led them to become socially isolated, affecting their confidence and self-esteem. Rather than focusing on rehabilitation (although some activities do help to manage some conditions, for example, memory loss), it is a principally a social group with the aim of giving people the opportunity to get out and about, form relationships, become more confident and experience new things.

Activities include:

  • personal projects
  • crochet and needlework
  • making garden ornaments
  • arts and crafts
  • games, quizzes and debates
  • walks in parks and outside spaces
  • coffee mornings
  • parties and celebrations
  • day trips to garden centres, bowling, museums, shops, zoos and concerts.

Some people attend just so they can spend time with friends they’ve made in the group and catch up over a cuppa.

Members of the group are encouraged to say what they would enjoy doing or trying and the Kingfisher team will aim to make it happen!
