Longstanton Bowls Club

Back to Activities

Longstanton Bowls Club plays lawn bowls outdoors on a grass surface at the bowling green in Northstowe. The sport is enjoyed by players of all ages and abilities and there is a social aspect to the Club too.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • lawn bowls provides gentle exercise in the fresh air;
  • players develop hand-eye coordination, balance and mobility;
  • being part of a club provides opportunities to socialise with team-mates and visiting opponents.

"Bowling keeps me going...otherwise I'd go crackers!" Ray (a member of an opposing club)

What to expect

A game of skill and strategy rather than strength, lawn bowls is played at 'roll-ups' (informal practice sessions) or competitively at tournaments. It is suitable for both men and women (and boys and girls) to play.

The outdoor season starts in the second half of April and ends in early September. If you would like to try lawn bowls, visit the club on a Thursday afternoon from 2.00pm to 4.30pm. Or if you email David (the Chairman of the Club), he can arrange for you to join a session on a Saturday afternoon from 2.00pm to 4.30pm.

If you’re not sure if bowls is the game for you, then you can go along and spectate. There are plenty of seats overlooking the green and in the evenings the Pavilion bar is often open. A full list of fixtures can be found in the diary section of the members area of the Club's website (remember to check for 'home' fixtures if you'd like to spectate at Northstowe).

More information

The Club meets at the bowling green at Western Park Pavilion in Northstowe, though members of the Club come from many surrounding villages. There is plenty of free parking at the Pavilion.

All you need is a pair of flat sole shoes; the Club will provide everything else. There is no dress code for roll-up sessions. If you have mobility issues or are in a wheelchair, adaptations can be made to enable you to play - email David to discuss your requirements.

The Pavilion has toilets and there are limited kitchen facilities for refreshments - you may want to bring your own soft drinks as bowling is thirsty work!

If you don't want to play, but would like to help out, you could always volunteer to support other aspects of running the Club - email David (see above) for details.

Your first 'roll-up' is free (as is spectating).

To join the Club and play regularly there is an annual membership fee and then a small payment for each tournament or roll-up session - for more details, visit the website.
