Mind in Mid Herts (a mental health charity) is on the lookout for volunteers in and around Royston to befriend people experiencing mental health challenges as well as help out at two weekly wellbeing groups.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- volunteering is a way of giving back to the community;
- you will be able to put your life experience to good use whilst learning new skills that will make a real difference to people facing tough times;
- you’ll be working as part of a supportive and appreciative team.

What to expect
Wellbeing groups provide a safe and supportive environment in which to meet others and share experiences. The group that meets in the afternoon on Wednesdays has an arts and crafts focus (all materials provided), and the group that meets in the morning on Thursdays is an opportunity for a cup of tea and a chat. The arts and crafts group will be joined by an art tutor once a month with the opportunity to try new skills like pottery. Volunteers are needed to help with practical things (making drinks, setting up and tidying away) as well as to be a listening ear. The venue for the groups is close to the station, has disabled access and free parking.
Volunteer befrienders regularly meet people who are struggling with their mental health (usually meeting for an hour on six occasions). You won’t be providing therapy or advice, but being a supportive and compassionate friend to people who need extra support on their mental health recovery journey. If meeting in person is difficult, then volunteers who can provide ‘keep in touch’ telephone calls are also needed.
If you’d like to contact Carlie to discuss these volunteering opportunities, send her an email or give her a call using the contact information provided.
