Live and online, these forty minute Strength & Balance classes via Zoom include standing and seated movement to music, strength and mobility exercises and balance work. Led by Lou from Cambridge Bootcamps.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- gaining strength and fitness helps to future-proof the body, increasing confidence and decreasing risk of falls and injuries;
- taking part in a group activity (even when it is online) enhances social wellbeing;
- regular exercise improves mood, relieves stress and boosts self-esteem.
“I really enjoy these sessions. We do lots of different things and Lou gives us plenty of options so there is always something I can do and I love the music we use for the warm up.”

What to expect
These online Strength & Balance classes are for anyone of any age who needs or prefers to exercise at home. They are particularly suitable for those who are:
- experiencing joint niggles or mobility problems;
- affected by symptoms of menopause;
- returning to exercise following illness or injury;
- over 50 wanting to build or maintain functional strength, fitness and mobility.
Classes are suitable for all fitness levels but when registering everyone must complete the medical waiver and obtain clearance from their GP if necessary - do email Lou on the email address provided if you need to know more.
All the sessions will be run by Lou and last 40 minutes. Classes are held on Zoom so you'll need a PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone that has internet access.
It is up to you if you have your camera on – if you would rather not be seen then you can just leave your camera off and follow along.
You’re free to join in with as much or as little as you choose, stand up or sit down, use weights or not and if you wish to leave early you can log out of the session.
More information
To enrol for the first time just follow the free strength and balance trial link on the website to get set up and booked on to which ever session you’d like to attend. An email will then be sent with a confirmation and the Zoom link to click on the day. Booking is essential otherwise you won’t have access to the Zoom link to join the class.
For the session you’ll need a chair without arms (a dining chair or similar) as some exercises are seated or in a leaning position. Some exercises also use weights. If you have a pair of light dumbbells that’s great but don’t worry if not – a pair of unopened tins of soup or two water bottles will suffice so long as you can grip them to lift and lower them. It is also important to make sure there are no trip hazards in your workout area or anything you might hit your arms and legs on as you move them about.
It's best to wear non-restrictive, comfortable clothing and comfy, flat shoes such as a t-shirt, tracksuit and trainers.
Having a drink of water handy is a good idea in case you get thirsty.
To sign up for your free first session head to www.gocbc.fit and scroll down to the Strength and Balance section to get started.
After the first free session, classes can be booked and paid for in blocks of ten sessions (which you can attend at any time, you don't have to go every week). The price is on the website.
