Sustainable Shepreth is a group of residents passionate about addressing the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss. With litter picks, environmental working parties, events, talks and workshops there are many ways to get involved.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- it is community-based and provides a sense of connection with others - you'll meet other like-minded people from the village;
- it provides something tangible that you can do if you are feeling anxious about climate change and the environment - you will be making a difference;
- you'll be learning new skills and gaining experience, which will give you a sense of achievement whilst boosting your confidence.
"It was so nice to help at yesterday's event, it was good to be involved and work with the other people helping and to have a good purpose, and really took my mind off other things for a couple of hours."

What to expect
Sustainable Shepreth was founded in January 2023 by a group of residents, quickly gaining the support and encouragement of the parish council and the local community.
The Sustainable Shepreth team organise a range of activities and events relating to enhancing biodiversity, reducing consumption and waste, supporting connection to the natural world, increasing resilience to floods and droughts, enabling sustainable food production and reducing the cost of energy and associated CO2 emissions in private and community buildings. Specific examples include environmental working parties on the L-Moor (a Wildlife Trust BCN nature reserve), the village church yard and on the Old School Field; community litter picks; Repair Cafés, clothes swaps, conferences/workshops and film nights.
When someone attends an activity they are welcomed by a member of the Sustainable Shepreth team or another volunteer, introduced to other participants, briefed on why the activity is happening, what tasks are required and any associated Health & Safety instructions. The goal is to make everyone feel welcome, included and supported. Complete beginners are welcome, as are individuals with relevant prior experience or skills. You can find out what is happening on the Sustainable Shepreth Facebook page or padlet (see contact info for links).
The length of activities is variable. Typically they will be one to two hours long, or, if longer, to have designated time slots. There is flexibility for people to leave before the end of an activity if they need to, although you are expected to be there at the designated start time to hear the initial briefing.
If you are planning to take part in an activity or event or if it is your first time, it is suggested you email the team to let them know so you can receive relevant information in advance or notification if the activity is cancelled. Carers, parents or your social prescribing link worker or support worker are very welcome to come along too - but please let the team know in advance.
