Pharmacists are experts in medicines who can help you with minor health concerns as well as dispense prescriptions.

Pharmacies:

As well as dispensing private and NHS prescriptions, pharmacists can offer advice and over-the-counter medicines for a range of minor illnesses, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, tummy trouble and aches and pains. They can also help with stopping smoking, advice about safe sex and emergency contraception.

If symptoms suggest it’s something more serious, pharmacists have been trained to make sure you get the help you need – they will tell you if you need to see a GP, nurse or other healthcare professional.

Many pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues without being overheard.

You do not need an appointment – you can just walk in during opening hours.

Dispensaries:

Some GP surgeries have dispensaries from which patients can collect medicines prescribed by their GP. Dispensaries often have limited opening times and can only dispense medicines to patients living close to the surgery.
