Steel Bones - Support for Amputees

Back to Support

Steel Bones is a nationwide charity created by amputees for the amputee community. Their mission: to empower amputees and their families to live life to the fullest through activities, socialising & finding support. There are regular meet-ups in Great Shelford.

Steel Bones' co-founder Emma welcomes you:

What to expect

Steel Bones is for amputees and people with limb difference - of any age, from babies and toddlers and up. They provide peer mentoring support, housing, benefits support, and gym classes wherever they can secure funding.

Once someone has registered (for free) with Steel Bones, they get access to a whole host of benefits, one of which is peer support from those with lived experience of being an amputee. Members of Steel Bones feel listened to and less isolated. They also provide support for the whole family and friend network, not just the individual amputee. These partners, children, and friends often support each other, too.

They have inclusive gym sessions in Cambridge University Sports Centre and Gym suitable for a complete beginner and all levels. Carers, parents, social prescribers etc. can join in too to oversee sessions, unless the session is fully booked. The sessions lasts an hour and participants can leave at any time.

There is also a regular meet-up at the café in Scotsdales Garden Centre in Cambridge.

They have an online coffee catch-up that registered families are welcome to attend.

Steel Bones offers a range of other free events for the whole family and are always open to receiving new ideas for things people would like to do, so if there is anything people would like to try that perhaps they did before becoming an amputee but haven't felt confident enough to do since, they can help organise and support at the event. This has been a huge confidence boost for people that might have felt they've lost a bit of themselves.

All the details of events and meet-ups can be found on the events page of their website.

More information

All event venues are accessible, with blue badge parking available. Wear sports clothes for the gym sessions and something comfortable for the meet-ups.

Steel Bones works hard to keep their activities free for attendees. If they need to ask for a contribution, it will be made very clear with plenty of notice. People are welcome to make a donation if they would like and are in the position to.

Amputees and /or their family members are welcome to come to one of their events to see if they feel comfortable. To continue coming, Steel Bones ask that they register which is completely free to do.
